More kids in sports could lead to more urgent care injuries
Children can be very active whether playing outside or, especially while competing in sports. Although high school athletes make up the bulk of sports-related injuries each year, children ages 5 to 14 still make up nearly 40 percent. The number injuries in that age group vary by sport with football being at the top, followed by baseball, soccer, basketball and softball.
As your child’s age increases, so does the rate and severity of the wounds. Nearly half of all sports injuries in middle and high school students are from muscle overuse but more than half are preventable. Although most accidents happen during practice, one out of three parents don’t have their kids take the same safety precautions as they would during a game.
If your individual or company sponsored health plan has a high deductible, cover your out of pocket exposure with an accident plan. Some plans cover expenses even if paid by your insurance company.
